Carnavales de Puerto Rico

In 2015 the PRAA presented an exhibition inspired by the carnival tradition of Puerto Rico. The exhibit featured original handmade masks and costumes from the three largest carnival on the island: El Carnaval de Máscaras de Hatillo, Las Fiesta de Santiago Apóstol de Loiza, and El Carnaval de Ponce. In addition, the exhibit presented a collection of photographs that documented a blend of Spanish and African cultural traditions dating back to the 1850’s and how these festivities have evolved in recent years. In collaboration with Afri Caribe, Carnavales de Puerto Rico culminated in a major concert at the Harris Theater, Chicago. Click on learn more for a concert video clip.
